/>

The neurophysiological dynamics of understanding each email message are very complex. From that complexity, three basic phases float to the top that you will want to become familiar with.

I like to label these:

(1) the association phase,

(2) the connection phase, and

(3) the reaction phase.

Let us look at each of these, and how the writer and reader can assume a more active role.

The Association Phase

In the Association Phase, the sender's words are read and converted to an image in the reader's mind, optimally the same image the writer held in his mind. Sometimes, the writer's words lack enough information and the recipient cannot grasp the image. The word count has nothing to do with the creation of an image. I have read long emails that dance around any possibility of creating an image even if the recipient could read between the lines.

The first question I ask myself when receiving an email is: "Is what they are saying giving me enough information so I can form a clear image?" If not, I ask, "Am I in an open space at the moment to translate this image?" Sometimes, when pressed for time or there's too many thoughts swirling in my head, the space isn't available. If not in the right space, I move the email to a "to be read later" subfolder, and schedule a follow-up time to reread.

Later, after returning, and in a good space to reread, and the image is still not appearing, I send a reply email to the sender asking for clarity. My language usually goes something like this: "Thank you for your email. I have read it several times and can't seem to form a clear image of what you are asking. Could you please ask again in a different way so that I can give it my full attention and respect it deserves?"

If the email covers several subjects that were confusingly intermixed, I will also include some additional language like this: "When I write emails with various topics, I find it beneficial to create separate topic titles that focus on what comes next. Could you possible do this to add to the clarity?"

It is the sender's responsibility to convert their image into words. The right words that the reader can transform back into the same image given. Don't take on the writer's responsibility, or make assumptions, it only leads to miscommunication. If you do, the image they form of you will be off kilter and negative.

The Connection Phase

When writing your response, you will want to make sure the reader receives a clear image of what you are sending as well.

This means that your words need to match the return image you want to convey. If the topic is about apples, you do not want to add an orange in the middle of the apple image. Match apples to apples first because that was responding to the original image.

If you need to add an orange for topic support, place the information after the apple discussion in order not to distort the original image. This lets the receiver digest the apple and then tells them that another image is about to come. Their mind will prepare the space for the new image.

When offering the orange, tell them the purpose of the orange and why you are adding the image. This way the reader knows to open a new file.

Another question I like to ask myself, after writing and before sending, one you might like to use, "Will the reader be able to file the image I'm sending in the same folder they began with?"

Our brains file information just as if we were dropping files in a filing cabinet manner.

Instead of just telling the reader, show the reader the image, and what folder to tuck their image in. The reader is expecting this answer. If they don't receive it, they wonder what to do with the image, it doesn't match any file in their cabinet. This splits their focus, slows down their connection, or can even halt the connection in toto.

I am sure you have your own favorite topic transition phrases; here are seven of my own. When you give these transition phrases a line of their own, the receiver's brain acts quickly to note an orange is coming.

1. Let me guess what you might be thinking.
2. As odd (unusual) as it may seem…
3. I am not at all surprised.
4. There's a story that goes with this, and I will get to this in the next paragraph.
5. Let me see if I can make this a little easier.
6. Its hard to believe, but…
7. In other words,…

The Reaction Phase

Writing an email response is not the same as speaking to that person. You don't have the immediate feedback from their body language, their silence, or huh when it isn't clear. Connecting via email with its time lapse also causes difficulty. You experience the same thing when you call, leaving a voice mail, and the party returns your call days later. If you don't state in the voice mail what you are calling about, or the person doesn't restate the purpose when they call back, your mind takes moments looking for the appropriate filing cabinet and file. Sometimes I receive a response back several weeks later and the original email I wrote isn't included. Then I must stop think or even hunt for the original email. A very time consuming process.

I find it best to begin a returning response with a "this is where we left off" paragraph. Don't assume the reader still holds the previous image in their mind. They don't. Many images came and went during that space and the previous email sits in their in box, file folder, or cabinet or worse dismissed due to lack of connection, in order to continue their processes.

It is important to reread the email before hitting send. Not just for grammar or spelling but to see that you convey the right image. It is the time to ask, "Did I convey the appropriate image with a file folder connection?" If yes, hit send.

Catherine Franz, a eight-year Certified Professional Coach, Graduate of Coach University, Mastery University, editor of three ezines, columnist, author of thousands of articles website:

Are you thinking about list building… in particular, how to have successful list building campaigns with thousands of active subscribers who will take action on your emails, and also one that will generate you massive amounts of income on demand? If so, the list building tips below are sure to help you out.

While the steps involved in email list building – namely creating an opt-in page, signing up for an autoresponder service, and following up with your subscribers, may seem easy tasks, but, in order to have successful list building campaigns, you need to do them right – Starting from how you create your opt-in page.

In the next few sections, I'm going to share with you 3 list building tips that will allow you to have successful list building campaigns just like any other Internet Marketing gurus.

Give Them Enough Reason To Sign Up

I'm sure most of your visitors, prior to visiting your website (where you have your opt-in page is) are already subscribers of other marketers' mailing lists, and their emails are flooded with messages from these marketers every single day.

Unless you give them enough reason why they should sign up for your list, they will not do so.

Therefore, what you should do is to offer them something that is of high value in exchange for their first name and email address. It should be something that they can receive immediately after they have sign up – such as a short report, audio/video course, email tutorial series, etc.

To increase your opt-in page's opt-in rate, what you can do is to offer something that contain solutions to nail-biting problems that your visitors may have (you can find out pressing problems that your niche market have by conducting some simple research through forums).

What you also need to do is that, in your opt-in page, you will want to highlight that upon signing up, they will be able to get instant solutions to nail-biting problems that they have (and you will need list down the problems.

By doing so, you will be able to grab your visitors by the eyeballs and they'll be more inclined to enter their first name and email address as they want solutions to these nail-biting problems.

Choosing A Reliable Autoresponder Service

Your autoresponder is the heart of your all list building campaigns.

Therefore, you must choose one that is not only reliable, but also one that has excellent customer service, where you can get help from instantly whenever you bump into any problems.

The reason is because you want your email messages to be able to reach all your subscribers. Imagine if you are using an unreliable autoresponder service, and whenever you send out promotional emails, it only gets sent out to 50% of your list subscribers. You'll tend to lose out on lots of income as a result, and it's not even your fault!

Therefore, I would strongly recommend that you sign up for a reliable autoresponder service. There are 3 autoresponder services that I would highly recommend, and they are ImnicaMail, Aweber and GetResponse.

Structuring Your Email Content

You should structure your email content according – such that it is neither 100% promotional-based nor 100% free information.

The reason is because if your email content is 100% promotional-based, you will start to see your subscribers gradually unsubscribing from your list as most people hate to being sold to.

On the flip side, if your email content is 100% free information, then it is obvious that you will not be able to generate any profits from it your list building campaigns.

What I would recommend is to have a mix of free information and promotional-based content – In that you can send out 4 emails that contains free information for your subscribers, and 2 emails that contain information where you review a product/service.

So, there you have it – The above are 3 list building tips that, if you follow them, will help you build successful list campaigns.

I've been surfing around the web lately and I've just noticed how many people are trying to look for real and effective list building tips. The sad thing is that if you Google such key phrase, all you'll end up with are a couple of sites that uses these keywords in their domain name, despite the fact that they're not offering any free tips as most people who searched the term was expecting.

Of course, that could be disappointing, but if that happens to you, you should fret not. There are tons of different sites that can give you free information on the topic and you might be surprised how helpful these tips can be. One example, of course, is this blog.

As most regular readers will know, the general idea of this blog is to help people in their marketing ventures. Most regular visitors would also know how much I encourage people to get to email marketing, reason why I am offering free list building tips every so often. So, if you got here after searching for such tips online, well, you're in luck, as I have a good number of tips ready to dish out today!

But first, it must be established that list building is no easy feat. You will need to exert some effort to make it really happen, so don't expect that all you need to do is sign up for a couple of things and then you'll start receiving checks in no time. You will need to do a couple of things, like the following, so pay close attention.

Free list building tips:

1. Research! A lot of free information is available online, so make sure you get hold of them. You might need to do some digging, though, as most of these posts are already buried somewhere especially with SEO only targeting potential buyers.

2. Be organized. Set goals, arrange things in proper order, and make a to-do list. This will help a lot in your quest to building a list for your business.

3. Read. Some people tend to just click, click, and click. Well, this shouldn't be your case, because by not reading carefully, you might miss vital information that might be useful in your venture.

4. Interact. The very reason you have a list is so that you can better connect to your readers, clients, and followers. So, make sure to actually reach out and talk to the people you send mail to.

5. Follow instructions. The sad part about some people is that they think they can modify a thing or two about certain techniques in internet marketing. Well, of course, you can, but not when you're still starting out and still learning. So, to avoid any mishaps, follow directions and instructions, especially when it comes to list building tips.

<span

They will possibly delete your e-mail or neglect it dependent on what it really says. Inside your subject matter line, make an effort to specify a benefit that the subscriber might get by reading your mail. At this point they won't hesitate due to the fact you gave them useful content upfront for absolutely nothing. You possibly can also deliver such points as satisfaction surveys, listing of links for your top five greatest articles, a unique subscriber's gift in PDF form, and a individual note asking subscribers for points, comments and stories to include in your electronic mails.

Make Email Messages Personalized

It is an excellent concept when you deliver a little private touch by such as the persons name within the email possibly inside subject line and/or within the body. Utilizing the subscribers name can help assemble a closer relationship with the reader. Provide them the chance to connect with you by using Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or almost every other social media venue. Feed them with highly related info, for example, Network Marketing critiques, firm analysis, polls, news and market details that they are searching for. Individuals really do not care what that you are selling, but they are going to respond to you when they really feel that you have their greatest needs in mind.

Get Rid Of Subscribers When Ask

No single person likes being spammed, so if people request to be removed from your list, please do so immediately. This is usually effortlessly completed by such as a unsubscribe link in every electronic mail. No one prefers for their subscribers to leave, nevertheless it is not the finest interest to suit your needs or your subscriber to receive email messages which they don't want.

Merely by utilizing these most valuable points explained on this post, you're capable to bring your e-mail advertising and marketing to some completely new level – attaining significantly many more subscribers, and also building together your very own brand and trustworthiness simultaneously.

Anthony is a successful marketing entrepreneur, mentor and coach. />

These days, it is easier than ever to generate a series of email messages to go out to your list and attract new business. The real difficulty, though, is to make your email campaign as effective as possible. Here are 15 tips to make your small business email marketing program as effective as possible.

1. Make Sure Your Message Gets Through

Increased efforts by the major email systems have included mechanisms to trap unsolicited emails from getting through to the recipient's inboxes. Be certain that you use a double opt-in method to ensure that you are 'white listed' in your recipient's email system. Also, be careful with the use of such words as 'Free', 'Save', 'Discount' etc in both your subject line as well as email text.

2. Personalize Your Message

Increase the click thru and read rates by using the recipient's first name, as in "Dear John" rather than "Hi, there!". This makes your subscribers feel as though they already have a relationship with you. Just doing this little thing can improve reading and click thru rates by as much as 650%.

3. Use Text Rather than HTML

Numerous studies have shown that most Internet users respond better to plain text links rather than clicking on an image to take a desired actions. For this reason, always use bold, blue, and underlined text links to obtain more conversions and sales.

4. Use a Third Party Autoresponder Service

By following the rules of on of the better autoresponder services, you will be forced to adhere to more stringent ANTI-SPAM rules and that means a direct advantage in your read and click thru rates. Besides, it will make life much easier in setting up a nice marketing series so that you can manage the process much more effectively.

5. Send on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Many studies have shown that the best days to perform a mail out are on Tuesday or Wednesday. People just seem to be more receptive to communications on those days.

6. One Message is Not Enough

By using a good autoresponder service, you can plan an effectively way to automatically follow-up with your subscribers to provide them with information on your products and services. Many studies have shown that the average person is not motivated to purchase until after the 6th or 7th contact with a company. You can establish the messages as well as the interval between messages and this will help your build trust with your subscriber.

7. Build a Brand Through Consistency

Always pay particular attention to the look and feel of your email message to ensure that they come across as professional rather than something that was thrown together in a hurry. Keep your look and feel consistent across all your emails. If you are doing a newsletter, creating a template with your company logo really helps in this regard.

8. Create the Expectation

When you are sending a regular email to your subscribers, be sure to do so on a regular internal and stick to it. Your customers will come to "expect" your email with anticipation and you surely don't want to disappoint them.

9. You Get 1/2 Second of Their Attention

When your subscriber opens your email, you have about 1/2 second to grab their attention before they delete your message and go on to other tasks. In your subject line, be sure to specify a benefit that the customer can expect by reading your email. For example, instead of using "My Company Email Newsletter", you might say, "MyCompany Newsletter: 10 Tips for customer Satisfaction".

10. Appeal to the Preview Pane

Many email systems, such as MS Outlook, now have a preview pane in which the subscriber can see the lead-in text of each email before they open it. Be certain that you have some very interesting content in the first couple of lines of your emails.

11. Test Your Links

Try doing a split test of several emails to determine which links appeal the most to subscribers. Try out different color links as well as link placement in a couple of emails and then check the statistics (from the autoresponder service) to determine which type link and which placement achieved the best results.

12. Try An Ethical Bribe

To get a higher subscription rate to your newsletter, offer them an "Ethical bribe" to sign up. Give subscribers a free ebook on the subject or a good discount coupon just for signing up. Everybody like something for nothing!

13. Email Mini-Courses

By providing free information to your subscribers you can more easily establish your credibility and collect more names to your email list. Why not create a small "Mini-Course" of several (5-10) emails on a topic of interest and schedule them to be delivered one to two days apart. That way, just when thoughts of your company have diminished in the mind of the subscriber – here comes another lesson in your mini course. Be sure to make the content informative and not too hard sell.

14. Comply with the SPAM Laws

The last thing that you want to be accused of is being a "spammer" – one who generates a bunch of unsolicited emails. Be sure that you know the rules and that you provide subscribers with the capability to unsubscribe at the bottom of each email. This will keep your list clean and you know that your subscribers really do "want" your information and a relationship with your company.

15. Be Sure to Always Sign Your Emails

Your signature box at the close of the email is your best way to attract more traffic to your site. Be sure to include your personal information, company details, and even a link back to your main website. It might look like this:

Regards,

Joe Schmoe

President

My Company, LLC

Visit our website at: MyCompany.com

When you put these 15 tips into practice in your email marketing program, you will enjoy increased readership, company branding and you will attract more subscribers! />

If you're beginning an email program or you've been sending email already but know that you're going into your recipients' junk mail folders, this article explains how to improve deliverability. In this article, you'll learn how to optimize your email program to give it the best chance of making into a user's inbox. This process is called "deliverability" and is the first step to successful email marketing.

What is "Hitting the Inbox"?

One of the greatest problems facing email marketers is making sure that your email goes to the user's inbox instead of the spam folder. When everything is driven by whether a user opens an email, that means that the user needs to actually SEE the email first. In truth, how many of us check our spam or junk folders regularly?

Getting your marketing email to actually go into the inbox is one of the most complicated parts of email marketing (and the part that fails the most often). Here are ten tips to keep your email from ending up in the junk folder.

1. Get on the Hotmail and Yahoo! White Lists

Hotmail and Yahoo! both keep lists of approved senders. Once you're on that list, you'll almost always go into the inbox. If you send a particularly spammy email, however, you can be removed from the list. The process can be frustrating and take a long time, but it's well worth it.

2. If You're Using Your Own Server, Make Sure it "Drips" the Messages

Spam filters at most email providers look to see how many messages you're sending at a time. If you're sending to a large list, even if you have a fast and efficient email sending server, have the server "drip" the messages out slowly. You really don't want more than a couple thousand to hit any one email provider per hour if you're playing it safely.

3. Break Large Lists Into Smaller Ones

There are many reasons to break large email lists into smaller ones, but the best reason is that doing so will mean that the spam complaints that you receive when you send your email won't be in one huge mass. It is inevitable that even loyal subscribers sometimes mark you as spam. If you send your large list in smaller segments, the email provider (Hotmail, MSN, etc.) will see less spam complaints bundled together at one time.

4. "Clean" Your Email List Frequently

Most, if not all, email providers' spam filters penalize your domain or IP with a higher spam score (meaning you are more likely to end up in the junk folder) if they see that you are sending emails to bad email accounts. A bad email account is an address that doesn't exist, has been disabled or has a full inbox. These addresses should be cleaned (or "pruned") from your email list regularly to avoid this. If you allow them to add up on your list, you will eventually be flagged as a spam provider.

5. Provide a Clear Unsubscribe Link

Nobody likes it when somebody unsubscribes from their email list. However, providing a clear way to unsubscribe (and then honoring that unsub quickly) means that users are less likely to get frustrated and just mark you as spam. The number one criterion for ending up in the junk box is the number of spam complaints that you receive, so avoiding them at all costs is critical.

6. Encourage Your Customers to Add You as a Friend or Contact

Once a user has added you to his or her contact list, friend list or address book, you will always end up in their inbox. Use every opportunity to encourage those on your email list to add you as a contact. Comm100 suggests doing it in the email sign up conformation email, on the confirmation page and during most customer service transactions. A typical way to ask customers to do this is to say, "Ensure that you continue to receive the quality information from us that you enjoy by adding us to your contact list."

7. Test Your Email to Seed Addresses BEFORE You Send to the Main List

Before you send your entire email list the message you've worked so hard on, send a test message to each of the big email providers (Hotmail, Yahoo, MSN, Gmail, AOL and one generic office address that is viewed in an Outlook client). Send the test email using the exact same server and information that you'll use with your main list. If you end up in the junk box on the test send, then you'll end up in the junk box on your main send. The pre-send test means that you can try different subject lines and email content to try to figure out what sent you to spam.

8. Don't Have Sloppy HTML Code

Spam filters check for bad html code, particularly if it looks like the code was done in Microsoft Word and then thrown into an email. Use a professional coder (preferably one who has done email templates before and knows the best way to make them resolve properly in an inbox) or a template provided by your email sending partner.

9. Don't Use "The Big Image"

Sending an email that's all one big image file is a bad idea for many reasons. Foremost among those reasons is that spam filters look for those types of image-based emails. Big image files often carry hidden messages that would normally get caught in spam filters (words like "free"), so, when a spam filter can't read any real text in an email and only sees an image, it assumes the worst.

10. Don't Write Text that Sounds Like a Spammer!

This one should be obvious! The more "spam-like" text and phrases your email uses, the less likely it is to end up in the inbox. There are a number of free software solutions to check the "spam score" of an email before you send it, but there are also basic rules.

Don't use the word "free" too many times.
Don't use ALL CAPS.
Don't use lots of colored fonts.
Only use one exclamation point at a time!
Stay away from words you'd see in spam: drugs, porn, guaranteed winner.

If you've seen it used in a spam message that you received, don't use it in your own email message!

Even if you do all of these things and do them perfectly, you may still end up in the junk box. Email spam filter criteria change almost daily and can be impacted by things that you have no control over. However, if you, as a habit, send good email that your clients want, you'll get into the inbox more often than not. Be sure to follow the above guidelines because, once an email provider thinks that your email is spam, it is very hard to get back into the inbox!

One of the first steps to getting into the inbox is to choose a quality email partner.

One of the fastest ways to get your blog or website noticed is to seek inbound links — also known as SEO link juice.

When you get a dozen or so trusted and authority websites linking to your site, you're going to see your search engine rankings rise quickly.

Having more people link to you is good, however your efforts won't pay off nearly as much until you attract your first 12 or so backlinks.

And get this, you might be surprised to find out it doesn't matter how accurate the link anchor text is… what really counts is getting other websites that are trusted to pass a direct, one-way link to you.

I'm just one of literally billions of website owners willing to send you my link juice to your site. Yet surprisingly, very few people have asked me for a backlink. Yes, all you have to do is ask and odds are good that I'm going to send my SEO link juice your way.

As a person that both receives and seeks link requests, I'm in the unique position to know what both sides want from each other… and I've created a sort of "link juice cheatsheet" to help you get a large percentage of requests looked at… and most acted upon. Here's what I personally look for in a link juice request:

High value
Do you have a cool website? How about a Top 10 list? Do you have a nifty lookup tool? Have you published a unique 600-word article? If so, just contact me and odds are good I'm going to link to your site in less than a week.

Skip the ads
Whether it's fair or not, most bloggers and site owners don't like linking to webpages with ads. This is especially true for "noncommercial" social media sites (like Digg and Reddit) and authority .edu and .gov sites. That's why you might skip the ads during your link juice campaign, and then once you have a dozen backlinks, quietly add sponsored ads and links to monetize your site. (By the way, ads don't bother me one bit when I link to your site).

Consider cash incentives
Roughly half of those who link to my webpages do so without compensation. But the rest are automatically approved into my private affiliate program. That means each webpage they link to ultimately pays them a commission over the long term. Can you tie in an affiliate program offering to your free content?

Fresh is good
Given a choice between an ebook that's been available for 10 years (and everyone knows about) or one that's just released, most are going to be more excited to promote the new stuff.

If you've got a title or a lookup tool that's well-known to the marketplace, don't fret. Just change it up a bit — perhaps make it niche specific or offer an update for a quick makeover.

And if you're able to time your ebook or tool to a current event or breaking news, you're going to have an easy time getting site owners to link to your site.

Send a short email
The best way to contact me or any backlink source is by email. My online support system automatically sends your message to my personal email address (which I check every morning — even weekends and holidays).

Most email fail to get my attention because they obviously didn't invest a single nanosecond getting familiar with my blog or website. Whatever you do, invest a few moments to see what a site is all about… it's almost always VERY worth the 10-minute investment of your time.

To begin, start off your email with rapport. Next transition with how you offer a unique, free resource. End it with a call to action… the next step – that is what you're looking for the receiver of your link juice request to do next. This is a very simple formula that gets great results.

Here's an example of an email I just sent to a university… they have a resource directory about internet marketing, and I desperately want a backlink from this trusted directory (with a Page Rank of 7):

Subject: re: your internet marketing directory

Message:

Hi Betsy,

I just found your internet marketing directory
and was quite impressed.

I found myself taking lots of notes –
that AdSensePro Jen blog was amazing.
I tried her suggestions, and I'm already
seeing more money from AdSense.

And Kampyle.com was just awesome.
I never knew how valuable feedback was
until I tested it.

By far my favorite source you mentioned was
your link to the "Search Engine Ranking Factors" -
I'm glad to see these experts agree
about the importance of the webpage title.

Speaking of great sources,
you might be interested in this:

http://www.marketing-ideas.org/Blog-Post-Title.php

My subscribers tell me it's the best tutorial
I've ever written. It reveals how to
write the perfect blog title…

… A lot of bloggers struggle with this.

Would you be interested in linking to it
from your resource directory?

If so, the linking code as at the bottom of the webpage.

Cheers,

Lots of people come and go on email lists. A few of them actually tell me why they unsubscribed. These are some of the most fascinating responses because they’re usually passionate — and I struck a nerve.

Here are a few reasons people have unsubscribed from my email list this year and last year.

******

I am unsubscribing because of the most recent post and your saying that we should not have responded to 9/11. Thank you.

(I suggested forgiveness as an alternative to revenge. So this guy unsubscribed. Go figure. -RMH)

******

It’s just a lot of e-mail to add to already too much e-mail received daily, especially when I never explicitly opted in to receive these e-mails

(To this woman’s credit, I checked my opt-in page and realized I wasn’t saying subscribers would get email updates. So I changed this. -RMH)

******

I just have signed up for too many blogs. I’m on information overload.

******

I am sorry. But you have no value or you do not give any free e-book guides, software, cource, etc,.

******

Very good and valuable information but have to decrease the amount of email coming in… hard decision but will have to unsubscribe at this time. Thanks for all you do!

******

internet marketing is a huge scam and nobody honestly makes a living online

******

Tired of being sold things instead of given useful content.

(This one surprised me. In the month of April 2010, I’ve published 8 posts. Four of them have had soft sales pitches. Not a single pure sales message — and this person still freaked out. -RMH)

******

To many newsletters, I need to focus on the most relevant ones to my industry. I think you do good stuff. Except the references to your religion, then, I better not say anything.

******

I love your writing, I just don’t have the time to read everything in my inbox

******

I am an Obama supporter and DO NOT appreciate you posting such negative remarks about him…I no longer want to hear from you. You are entitled to your opinion and I am also entitled to mine. I did not like this post.

p.s. I WAS really a big fan and follower of you and your IM work. Not anymore.

(Amazing how radically a political difference of opinion can polarize people. This response proves it. -RMH)

******

Believe it or not, I’m actually happy when I get passionate reasons why people unsubscribe. It tells me that I’m bonding with people who are on the the other side of a particular viewpoint.

It also tells me that I’m standing up for something.

The only way you’ll ever develop a loyal following is by standing up for a particular point of view. This allows other people to identify and bond with you.

You can’t be all things to all people, so this is a good thing. Embrace that you’re never going to please everybody. Just do your best at being who you are — and writing to the white hot core of your fan base.

-

You may have already heard the rumors that email marketing is already dead or has already lost its charm, but, if you really want to find an effective way to market your goods, do not fall for this. Why? This is because email marketing is still a highly profitable way to advertise and promote your products while helping other people.

Once you got that out of the way, you may now be wondering how to build email list for your own products. To help you accomplish that, here are some easy tips how you can build your email list.

1. Sign-up form. Of course, you first need a sign up form for your newsletter on your website. As your website will be your online headquarters, it would be the most perfect place to promote and advertise your e-mail list. Just don't forget to place it somewhere it will be easily noticed and if you can, put it in almost all of your site's pages, to make sure that people won't miss it in case they want to sing up.

2. Offer a gift. Gifts are always a good motivation for people to do something, so if you have something related to what you're selling that you can afford to give away for free, like a mini e-course or an affiliate eBook, by all means, offer it to your potential newsletter subscribers.

3. Tell them why they need to subscribe to you. With the millions of free information people can easily get hold of nowadays, you would need to convince your readers and visitors why they need to sign up with your newsletter. Make sure to make it compelling, though, to assure the high rates of opt-ins on your email list.

4. Make sure to provide quality information. Again, as people can now easily get info online for free, you would need to provide something of high quality to stand out and be worthy of the time and vital info your subscribers have given you. One great way how to build email lists of quality is to avoid giving generic tips that can be easily found somewhere else online and make sure to be straight to the point and concise. This way, not only will you develop a great relationship with your subscribers, but you can also get more readers as your quality services will surely travel by word of mouth.

Although, these are only some of the more basic tips in how to build email list, it can still prove useful especially if done correctly. So, make sure to keep these in mind so you can be better equipped and ready for your email marketing venture.

Email is a funny thing.

You can spend hours writing a well-thought out sales email… only to see it flop. And you can kick out something in minutes that creates a buying frenzy.

Naturally, your subject line plays a huge role in whether your email even gets opened. And, in theory, this also affects your sales.

With that in mind, let’s play a little game. You read the two subject lines below, and then see if you can pick which subject line won. Got it? Okay…

Subject Line #1: Long-Shot Leads to Unexpected Win

Subject Line #2: China tells U.S. to “go straight to hell.”

Just to give you a little bit more background on these emails, both were sent to a house list of folks interested in trading. Both sold the same product at the same price. And both “piggy-backed” on news events.

The first email piggy-backed on the 2009 Superbowl. The second email piggy-backed on China’s move to unload the fraudulent derivative products sold to them by U.S. banks.

So both had tie-ins to events that would have been top of mind for most traders.

Alright, have you made your decision?

Good, let’s move forward.

Here are the open rates for each email:

Subject Line #1: 741 opens

Subject Line #2: 1,434 opens

Did you guess right?

Well, maybe you did and maybe you didn’t — but you actually don’t know yet.

That’s because open rates are a relatively meaningless metric. Think of print advertisements. You don’t care how many people read your headline; you care about how many people actually buy.

Fortunately, this particular client took my recommendation to buy some simple (and affordable) ad tracking software.

We use this software program to track the open rates and sales of every email we send out. (We also track ads by source so we know when our advertising dollars are working and when they’re not.)

Because we track emails like this, I can tell you that the real winner was Subject Line #1 — and NOT Subject Line #2 as you probably guessed.

Here are the numbers:

Subject Line #1: Long-Shot Leads to Unexpected Win – 741 opens, 17 sales

Subject Line #2: China tells U.S. to “go straight to hell.” – 1,434 opens, 9 sales

If you’re paying close attention, the first email got about half as many opens… but… almost double the sales!

This real-life example proves that while your subject line matters — and you should always aim to get your emails opened — a high open rate does not necessarily guarantee a greater number of sales.

And while this example may be appear to be an anomaly, I promise you: it isn’t. I’ve seen this same story played out a number of times.

I have a theory about this.

There are people on every email list who will never buy. They’re either freebie seekers or they’re just not interested in what you have to offer. This is a fact.

Unfortunately, we tend to think that everybody on a list is a potential buyer… and so we try to write for the list.

This is a mistake because “the list” doesn’t buy. Individual people on the list do.

So when you write emails, try to imagine your ideal buyer. Write to that guy. And don’t worry about all the non-buyers — they’re never going to buy anything anyway.

Said another way, don’t focus on maximizing attention; focus on maximizing sales. Don’t write to the list; write to the latent buyers on the list.

Making this simple mindset shift could make a massive difference in the results you get from your email marketing.

-Ryan M. Healy

P.S. How do you know which emails are really working and which ones aren’t? And how do you know which ads are worth running again? Well, you can’t really know — unless you track your ads by source.
<div
